Forbes announces regional items in defense bill

Greetings, Hampton Roads Military community. Sorry it's been a while since the last post, but I've been filling in on our state politics beat, which required a detour to U.S. District Court in Richmond . . .

Now back to the news.

Rep. Randy Forbes, R-Chesapeake, has announced several items of interest to the region that were included in the 2012 defense policy bill that has cleared the House Armed Services Committee.

The bill:

Strikes $30 million that would have been used to move an aircraft carrier from Norfolk to Mayport, Fla., although Adm. Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations, repeated his stance Thursday that the Navy intends to move one by 2019.

Authorizes nearly $75 million for modernization and improvements to Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and another $81.3 million to construct bachelor quarters at Naval Station Norfolk.

Increases funding for Navy ship and aircraft depot maintenance and fully funds shipbuilding construction plans.

Requires the Defense Department to give Congress 90-day advance notice of large-scale military realginments of over 1,000 military personnel. This relates to last year's surprise announcement to close Joint Forces Command in Hampton Roads. Virginia leaders were blindsided by the move.
