A helicopter crew from a Norfolk-based destroyer is believed to have killed four pirates who attacked a merchant ship this week in the Gulf of Oman, according to Combined Maritime Forces.
The USS Bulkeley came to the aid of the Artemis Glory, a German-owned, Panama-flagged crude oil carrier on May 16. The Artemis Glory had sent out a mayday call indicating they were under attack by pirates.
The Bulkeley launched its helicopter, an SH-60B, to investigate, and the crew saw pirates in a skiff firing small arms at the oil carrier. The helicopter crew engaged the pirates and all four were believed to have been killed. It isn’t known exactly which weapons system was used.
No U.S. sailors or crew members of the Bulkeley were injured in the engagement.
In March, the Bulkeley had another successful encounter with pirates, although under different circumstances.
Four pirates had come aboard a Japanese-owned merchant vessel 328 miles off the coast of Oman, and the crew had taken refuge in the ship. A boarding team from the Bulkeley, supported by the SH-60B helicopter, gained control of the vessel and detained the four men.
